Security of 5G networks

On 26 March 2019, the European Commission presented its recommendations to strengthen the cybersecurity of 5G networks. To implement the activities stipulated in the recommendations, the EU member states cooperate closely in the 5G Subgroup of the Cooperation Group on Security of Network and Information Systems.

By the end of June 2019, all the member states carried out a national risk assessment of the infrastructure of 5G networks. An EU-wide risk assessment was published in October 2019 in cooperation between the member states, the European Commission, and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA). The assessment points out the most important security problems that may arise in the future or become more important than before in connection with the introduction of 5G networks.

In January 2020, the Cooperation Group announced the Package of 5G Cybersecurity Measures. The aim of the package is to define a coordinated European approach, based on a set of possible common measures, which should address the main cybersecurity risks of 5G networks identified in the report on EU coordinated risk assessment. The set includes both strategic, technical and supporting measures.
